Speaking of dark and cynical…nice genre-bashing, WSJ! And nice judging of books by their covers! What a shallow, skewed piece this is. And for those like me who write (and teach with) YA books–thanks for helping set us back and continuing to spread a negative and erroneous perception of what this genre contains and is capable of.
As others before me have said here, since when should literature convey only the light side of life? But if you do want lightness and humor, there is abundant levity and wit and hilarity in YA and always has been. Start with Sue Townsend’s classic Secret Diary of Adrian Mole or if you want something of the present, John Green, E. Lockhart, David Larochelle, Justine Larbalestier and Adam Selzer are just a few of the names out there. These people are witty, sharp, playful, artful…There is a huge diversity in so-called YA. But this piece prefers instead to focus on extreme examples that suit the argument. A lot has happened since that tree grew in Brooklyn, readers. You might want to look further than a few sensationalist examples to see what else is out there. YA comes in all forms–high and low and in between. Sarah Dessen was conveniently left out of this piece. Why? Because her literary affecting, nuanced romances and understanding of teen mom gossip heartbreak makes a strong case for the worthiness of the YA genre. She’s huge with teens and I’m glad she is. She’s fantastic. Speaking of fantastic I noticed a glaring omission in any piece about darkness and YA lit: MT Anderson. So good, so smart, so brilliant and yes…dark (thought-provoking and smart and also, funny). Feed and Octavian Nothing are as astonishing as anything you can show me in the very best of general adult literary fiction. Such a shame Ms Gurdon hasn’t read Anderson or much of anyone else who is writing YA today. Because she didn’t dig deeper before she trashed this genre, she perpetuates the myth that YA is predominantly shallow and schlocky and should be avoided.
Speaking of avoidance–I think Ms. Gurdon skipped reading Sherman Alexie’s Part-Time Indian. That’s my sense anyway, from the reference in here. Anyone who has read it will see that it’s a charming and worthy addition to any teen’s bookshelf and those who censor it are the childish ones. Why is this book banned so often? because of a flippant comment about masturbation and a joke about Jesus. Absurd.
It’s not easy to get people to respect YA–even when your name is Sherman Alexie. And now the WSJ is on the rampage. Seems to me, though, that this argument is itself all zombie: not very smart but very destructive.
